THEATER
FollowingtheconsolidationoftheunitXarcadeinthethea-
tercorridor,thatis,ambulacrum,thecentralsegmentwasexplor-
ed,removingthefilldepositedaftertheedificehadbeenaban-
donedinthe7thcentury.Theadjacentsectionoftheouterwall,
whichalsosustainedheavydamageduringmodernconstruc-
tionworksin1964beforethetheaterwasdiscovered,alsocalled
forimmediateconsolidation(Fig.1).Aninventorywasmadeof
thewallfacingbeforetheentiresectionwasdismantled;thewall
wasthenreassembledpreservingasmuchoftheancientsub-
stanceascouldberetrieved;inmanycasestheoriginalmortar
inthejointswaspreserved,althoughseveralseriouslydamaged
orcrushedblockshadtobereplacedwithnewones(Fig.2).The
newlyappliedmortarwassimilartotheancientoneandcom-
posedofsand,lime,andpowderedbrickswitha5%additionof
whitePortlandcement.Intheupperpartofthewall,acom-
