Archaeologicalresearchcarriedoutinthisareawasbasi-
callyconditionedbythecurrentrestorationprogramofthe
Mission.Inordertoobtainadditionaldata,necessaryforthe
progressofrestorationwork,twodeeptrenchesweredugalong
thewesternfacadeoftheedifice.Theexcavationsresultedin
newdeterminations,sheddingmorelightonthehithertodis-
putedproblemsofthephasingandchronologyofthecomplex.

rekwasinchargeofthearchaeologicalresearch.Prof.WiktorA.Daszewskico-
directedtheexcavationsinsectorU.Themissionincludedthefollowing:Dr.Jolanta

thiscampaignowesmuchtotheefficiencyandfriendlysupportoftheAuthoritiesof
theEAO,particularlytoMrs.DoreyaSaid,DirectoroftheGreco-RomanMuseum,to
whomwewishtoexpressoursincerethanks.
