,inwhich
theprotagonist-narrator’spursuitofasuspiciousanddecrepitstrangeris
transformedintoajourneyrepresentedasadescentintoatimelessurban
spaceruledbydepravityandnefariousness.Grafinghisowndiscourseon
thisstoryaswellasonTheNarrativeofArthurGordonPym,H.P.Lovecraf
explicitlyrevealshisimitationandemulationofPoe’sworks.Particularly,in
theshortnovelAttheMountainsofMadness,Lovecrafconfrontsthepower
ofblacknessandtheillegibilityofevilwithhisstoryofanexplorationthat
leadstothediscoveryofanundergroundcityoftheAntarctic,ablasphe-
mousandmonstrouscitylyingatthebeginningoftime–amythicaland
archaicworldofhorrorandbarbarismwhichisatotalnegationofevery-
thinghuman.
