subjedofthePolishkings.Copernicusprovedhisupatriotism”dur-
ingthePolish-Teutonicwarof1519-1521whenheconfirmedhis
loyaltytothePolishmonard.Tus,fromthepointofviewofthe
lawandhisownpoliticalviews,hewasaPole.Tiswasnothin-
deredbythefadthatprobablythefirslanguagehelearnedfrom
hisparentswasGermanandhismother)sfamilyundoubtedlycame
fromGermanyandlokeGerman.Duringthatperiod,onecould
hardlyleakofGermansasanation.Telandsinhabitedbypeople
leakingvariousdialedsoftheGermanlanguageweredividedinto
manyterritorieswithseparaterulers,andtheHolyRomanEmpire

thatNicolausCopernicuswasoriginallyaresidentofToruń,aPrus-
sian(i.e.aninhabitantofhissmallhomeland-RoyalPrussia),and
aGerman-leakingPole.Fromthepointofviewofmoderntimes,
thisisdifculttoundersandandaccept,butintheperiodwhen
Copernicuslived,itwasthemosappropriatedefinitionofhisuna-
tionality.”NeitherCopernicushimselfnorhiscontemporariesever
referredtohimasGermanandhisnotoriousafliationwiththe
GermannationduringhissudiesinBolognahadnoethnicaleds.
