Theirincorporationinthestudywasmeanttoprovideananalysisandshow
howvariouseconomiccompetitivenessaspectsofGreece,Spain,andItalywere
evaluatedinthecourseofthecrisis,orhowthecrisisaffectedcompetitiveness.
Giventhedifferentdefinitionsofaneconomy’scompetitiveness,theserankings
emphasiseslightlydifferentfactorsdetermininghowcompetitiveaneconomy
isandtheyhavebeenpreparedusingdifferentmethodologiesandtakeintoac-
countvariousfactors,data,etc.Forthisreason,inordertogainamorecomplete
pictureofthesituation,rankingscontainedinreportspreparedbyinternational
institutions/organisations(TheHeritageFoundation,WorldEconomicForum,
InternationalInstituteforManagementDevelopment,theWorldBankGroup)
weretakenintoconsideration,andthefinalscoreachievedistheresultofmore
complexevaluationsandanalyses.Anotherpracticallysignificantandsynthetic
assessmentoftheconditionoftheeconomyanditschangesisprovidedbyrat-
ingagencies’recommendations.Theyhavealsobeenincludedinthestudyand
encompassthelong-termratingsofGreece,Spain,andItalyissuedbyMoody’s,
Standard&Poor’sandFitchRatingsratingagencies.
Additionally,thesummariesillustratingtheeconomicsituationinthecoun-
triesstudiedalsoincludetableswiththecorruptionperceptionindex(issuedby
TransparencyInternational)andestimatesonthesizeoftheinformaleconomy
(basedontheresearchofFriedrichSchneiderfromtheJohannesKeplerUni-
versityinLinz).
Inordertobetterillustratethescaleofchangesintheeconomicsituationsof
Greece,Spain,andItaly,theirevolutionwascomparedtothatofothercountries
oftheEuropeanUnion.Thefirstchapteralsoshowstheactionstakenmainly
inGreeceandSpaintomitigatetheeffectsoftheeconomiccrisisandimprove
themacroeconomicsituation.Othersourcesusedinthispartofthebookalso
includeEU’slegalacts,documentsofEUinstitutions,andcarefullyselected
literatureonthesubject.
Chapter2dealswiththefunctioningofthepoliticalsystemofcontemporary
Greece.ItstartsfromthewordsofAlexisTsiprasspokenintheparliamentdur-
