probablyrighttoabandontheideaoftheirartificialdivision.Tefundamental
problemisstillthelackofspace,followedbycomplexprotection,digitisation,
andpreventiveconservationoftheseverydemandingresources.
Itisworthnotingthatthebenefitsofseparatingacollection,inbothphysical
andorganisationalsense,withinexistingstacksordepartmentsincludefacilitat-
ingprovenanceresearchandcomplexdescription,aswellasapplyingspecialised
protectionandensuringoptimalstorageconditions.
CataloguingandResearchMethodology.Promotion
Cataloguingobjectswhichformaspecialcollectionisagradualandmultidi-
mensionalprocess,rangingfromthecreationofbasicinventoriesanddatabases
toscientificallypreparedcatalogues,whichshouldbeapriority.Acompetent
andengagedteamisthebasisforsuccessinthescientificfield.Tisisthemost
challengingarea,inmyopinion,whereachangeofcertainhabitsisrequired.
Irefermainlytotheneedforinterdisciplinarystudies,aswellasprojectsreal-
isedincooperationwithotherinstitutions(universities,libraries,museums).
Researchon19th-centurycollectionsrequiresnotonlygeneralknowledge,his-
toricalinparticular,butalsoenhancedexpertskillsinagivenfield,including
theapplicationofappropriatemodernmethods.Tesearegainedmainlyduring
studyvisitsinotherinstitutions(bothPolishandforeign),whichmakeitpossi-
bletocomparesimilarresourcesandindividualobjects,ascomparativestudies
constitutethebasisforcataloguinghistoricalandartisticcollections.Tebest
specialistonlinedatabases,digitallibraries,andcataloguesfacilitatethisprocess,
buttheycannotreplacethestudyoforiginalprintedbooks,manuscripts,prints,
ordrawings,thestudyoftechniques,bindings,orpaper,thefreecontactand
exchangeofexperiencebetweeninstitutions,curators,scholars,andrestorers.
Itisimportanttoshareorganisationalandresearchexperience,aswellasto
constantlyimproveprofessionalskillsandscientific(notonlypractical)knowl-
edgeofthefield.Aferall,tobeabletocallourapproachscientific,itisneces-
sarytosupportpractice,attributionism,andcataloguingwithanadequatedisci-
pline-specifictheoryandmethodology.Tenewpracticesdevelopedinthisway
willfosterbeneficialchangesintheorganisation,storage,acquisition,research,
cataloguing,andcirculationofspecialcollections.Tefollowingdisciplineswill
certainlybeusefulwhendealingwith19th-centurycollections:history(andits
manyauxiliarysciences),bibliology,historyofart,philologies(dependingonthe
