specificallybearthisinmind,becausethefashionablemillinerhaschieflyoneend
inview,howtohideanddegradethehumanbodyinthemostexpensivemanner.

Ultimately,thePre-RaphaelitedressachievedwhattheBrotherhoodhoped
toachievethroughtheirart:byusingthepastthedresstranscendeditsowntime
andcreatedsomethingprofoundlynewandmodern.Thedressesthatfollowed
Pre-Raphaelitedressreferredtoitsgeneralmodernisingeffectratherthan
specificdetailsofmedievaloriginandregressivesocialpurposes.Asthe
historyoffashionshows,Pre-Raphaelitedressevolvedintoanaestheticdress,
abohemiancounter-fashiontea-gownstyleandrationaldress.Bythe1880s,

artisticdress,backedupbythesocialandmedicalcampaigns,enteredgradually
thepublicsphere,andfinallyjoinedmainstreamfashionintheearlydecades
ofthe20thcentury.
