wereconsideredtheleastsuccessfulamongqualitativetechniqueswithinUSfirms
[Hashmi,Baker1988],Canadianfirms[Rice,Mahmoud1990],Turkishfirms
[Demirbag,Gunes2000]andJordanianfirms.
Quantitativetechniqueswereusedbyonly10.8percentofJordanianrespondents.

respondents[Subramanian,Motwani,Ishak1993],UKrespondents[Wyper1995],
Dutchrespondents[PahudDeMortanges,Allers1996],Turkishrespondents
[Demirbag,Gunes2000]andSwedishrespondents(Kettis,2004)usedqualitative
techniquesmoreoftenthanquantitativetechniques.Intermsofthemeanofpercentage
reportedsuccess,quantitativetechniqueswereconsideredtheleastsuccessfulby
Canadianfirms[Rice,Mahmoud1990]andJordanianfirms.
ThreepossiblereasonscanexplainwhyJordanianfirmsrefrainfromtheextensive
useofquantitativetechniques.Firstly,asinothercountries,theuseofquantitative
techniquesrequiresparticulardatathatlendthemselvestostatisticalmanipulation.
Suitabledatamaynotbereadilyavailable.Furthermore,data,ifavailable,tendtobe
inthewrongformatbecausesuchdataarecollectedforpurposesotherthanpolitical
riskassessment[Brink2004].Secondly,thecollectionofpoliticaldatacanbea
difficultprocessinJordanbecausethesecondarysourcesofinformation(e.g.
newspapers,televisionandcensus)arecensored;sothepresentationofrelated
politicaleventsisnotunbiased[MiddleEastMonitor:EastMed...2008].Thirdly,
theuseofquantitativetechniquesrequiresstatisticalandinformationprocessing
expertise.Inaddition,interpretingresultsneedsparticularskills[Kettis2004].The
firstandthirdofthesefindingsalsoapplytoothergeographicalcontexts.However,
thesecondoneisonlyofrelevanceinparticularcountries/regions.
Thefindingthatfirmsusingquantitativetechniqueswerelargerinsize,hadmore
yearsininternationalbusiness,generatedhigherrevenuefrominternationalbusiness
activitiesandhadfacilitiesinmorecountriesisinlinewiththatofHashmiandBaker
[1988]whofoundthathigh-internationalisedUSfirms(firmswithł20.0percentof
theirsalesgeneratedbyinternationaloperations)weremorelikelytoutilise
quantitativetechniquesthanlow-internationalisedfirmssincetheformerhadmore
resourcestousesuchtechniques.
6.Conclusionsandimplications
Quantitativetechniqueswereusedbyonlyaminorityofrespondents.Theextensive
relianceonqualitativetechniquesisinterestingsinceonemightexpectthatfirms
withahighdegreeofinternationalisationorfirmswhichoperateinpoliticallyvola-
