aspirationsresultsintheerosionofcommonlyunderstoodanduniver-
sallyacceptedsymbolicrepertoireswhichotherwisemayserveasbasesfor
interpersonalrelationships.Inthiscontext,culturecomprisesanarrayof
behavioursrangingfrom“theinternalunificationofvaluesbymeansof
reciprocalunderstandingandcommonaspirations”to“statesofdisper-
sionandconflict.”

Whenconceivedasaramificationofthedisappear-
anceofcommunityintermsofnormsandvalues,aswellasthedecrease
incommonlyunderstoodandsharedsymbolicdevices,thelatterprocess
underminesmechanismsresponsiblefortheformationofcollectiveiden-
titiesandpavesthewayfortheaforementionedconditionof“axiological
warpedness.”
Acceleratedsocialandculturalchangesdonottakeplaceinaunivocal,
unambiguousmanner.Ontheonehand,onemayobserverobustprocess
oftraditionandinstitutionalizationwhichresultinthereinforcementof
traditionalsocialstructures,theattenuationofsocialchange’space,and
newgenerations’adaptationtoalreadyexistingvalues,normsandbehav-
iouralpatterns.However,ontheotherhand,onemayalsonoticeacceler-
atingprocessesofindividualizationgivingrisetothesocietalcirculation
ofprovisionalrolesandsocialstatuses.Thisisalsoevidentasathreat
ofanomiedesignatingthein-depthdisintegrationofvalues,normsand
socialties.Yet,atthesametime,theverysameprocessmaybepositively
associatedwithchancestoshapeone’slifeprojectinanautonomous,
self-reliantandresponsibleway(self-directedness).8
Contemporarytransformationsincultureareveryoftencharacterized
bytheirhistoricallyunparalleledpaceofchangeandtheomnidirectional
characteroftheiraxiologicalreferencesandsymbolicinterpretations.
Thesefeaturescanbesubsumedundertheumbrellatermof“warped-
ness.”Liberty
,EqualityandFraternity
,conceivedofastheleadingsym-
bolicfiguresofmodernity
,arenowbeingdethronedbythefeaturesof
multiplicity
,latitudeandtolerancewhichareputforwardasvaluesorches-
tratingthedirectionofcontemporarychangestakingplaceinculture.

Knowledgeisfragile,andtheethos,whichisbeingtailoredspecificallyto
changeablesocio-culturalcontexts,losesthecertitudeofcognitive,axi-
ologicalandreligiouscriteria.Changeabilityseemstoconstitutethesole
long-lastingvalue.Likewise,theindividualizationofhumanchoices,self-
ishnessofmotivations,andsubjectivizationofmoraljudgmentsmaybe
