Alltheextensiveteachingonthesubjectoffreedomthatcanbe
foundinthedocumentsoftheSecondVaticanCouncilisalsoreflected
intheCatechismoftheCatholicChurchthatpresentsadefinitionof
freedomanddifferentiatesbetweenthefreedomofGod,Christand
man,andalsoaddressestheissuesofreligiousfreedomandtheso-
calledfreeunions.Theterm“freedom”andtheconceptoffreedom
appearin112placesintheCatechism(especiallyinNos.1730-1748),
providingavastbodyofmaterialforthestudyofthisconcept.
PopeJohnPaulII,inhisaddresstotheUnitedNationsOrganisa-
tion,putspecialemphasisonthefreedomprinciple,stressingthatfree-
domconstitutesthecommongoodofhumankind,despiteallthethreats
andriskstoitsbeingmaintainedinrelationtoman,family,nation,and
betweennations[JohnPaul1995].Evenso,thePopepinshishopes
thatthefreedomprinciplewillbemaintainedinthehumanfamilyonit
