Preface
Thehumanities’contributiontotheongoingenvironmentaldebate
isexpressedmostfullyinthevariouspostulatesforanecologicalethos
ofthesurvivalofmankind.Allofthosepostulatessubsumetherealis-
ticbeliefthattheconservationrequirementsapplyingtonature,ex-
cludingitshumancomponent,mustbereconciledandbalancedwith
mankind’scivilizationalaspirations.Thusthepostulatestakeintoac-
countthebeliefthatthenecessaryconditionforthedevelopmentof
humancivilizationistheprudentuseofnature’sresourcesthatsupply
uswithadequateamountsoffood,energyandrawmaterials.Theright
approachtoconservationmustthereforeinaccordancewithHubert
Markle’sdiagnosistakeintoconsideration“theinevitabilityofthe
transitionfromtheMesozoiceraofnaturetotheanthropozoiceraof
manandhisglobaleconomicculture”.Thisinturncallsforastrength-
eningofsystemicsolutionssecuringabalancedandproportionatein-
terdependencebetweennatureandculture.Studiesonthisissuehigh-
lighttheneedtotakeuparangeofactivitiesinwhichaproportionally
balancedrelationshipofnatureandculturewouldbeexpressedas
PhilippeR.putsit“throughaglobalpartnershipaimedatreconciling
theinseparablerequirementsofahealthyenvironmentandofahealthy
economyforallthepeoplesoftheworld”.
Thiscollectionofpaperspresentsahumanisticapproachtosus-
tainabledevelopment,focusingonitstheoreticalandmethodological,
legalandadministrative,religiousandcivilizational,aswellasso-
cio-politicalaspects.Theverynumberoftheseaspectsontheone
handpointstothecomplexityofthehumanistapproachtoenviron-
mentalconcerns,andontheotherseemstocrownmanyyearsofeffort
putintoexploringthesignificanceofitscontributiontothediagnosis
andcontroloftheecologicalcrisis,andtheattemptstoovercomeit.
