Onthebasisofmanyyearsofresearchandobservation,Jungcame
totheconclusionthatthedifferencesinpeople’sattitudesand
preferencesarefarfromrandom.Hedevelopedaconceptwhich
ishighlyfamiliartoustoday:thedivisionofpeopleintoextrovertsand
introverts.Inaddition,hedistinguishedfourpersonalityfunctions,
whichformtwoopposingpairs:sensing-intuitionandthinking-feeling.
Healsoestablishedthatonefunctionisdominantineachpair.
Hebecameconvincedthateachandeveryperson’sdominantfunctions
arefixedandindependentofexternalconditionsandthat,together,
whattheyformisapersonalitytype.
In1938,twoAmericanpsychiatrists,HoraceGrayandJoseph
Wheelwright,createdthefirstpersonalitytestbasedonJung’stheories.
Itwasdesignedtomakeitpossibletodeterminethedominant
functionswithinthethreedimensionsdescribedbyJung,namely,
extraversion-introversion,sensing-intuitionandthinking-
feeling.Thatfirsttestbecametheinspirationforotherresearchers.
In1942,againinAmerica,IsabelBriggsMyersandKatherineBriggs
beganusingtheirownpersonalitytest,broadeningGray'sand
Wheelwright’sclassic,three-dimensionalmodeltoincludeafourth:
judging-perceiving.Themajorityofsubsequentpersonalitytypologies
andtestsdrawingonJung'stheoriesalsotakethatfourthdimension
intoaccount.TheyincludetheAmericantypologypublishedbyDavid
W.Keirseyin1978andthepersonalitytestdevelopedinthenineteen
seventiesbyAušraAugustinavičiūtė,aLithuanianpsychologist.Over
thefollowingdecades,otherEuropeanresearchersfollowedintheir
footsteps,creatingmorefour-dimensionalpersonalitytypologiesand
testsforuseinpersonalcoachingandcareercounselling.

dimensionsthefournaturalinclinations.Theseinclinationsare
