theinvitationtoparticipateintheproject.Atthebeginningwepresentanar-
ticlebyAntoninaKozyrskaReligiousAssociationsandUkrainiansocio-politi-
calchangesafer1991.Tearticlesignificantlybroadensourperspectiveonthe
subjectmatterbypresentingresultsoftheresearchrecentlypublishedinthe
author’spostdoctoraldissertation.Tearticleattemptstopresentanextremely
importantissueoftheinfluenceofconfessionmattersonthestatetransforma-
tionprocesses.A.Kozyrskarightlynotedthataferthecountry’sdeclarationof
independencein1991,religiouspluralismwasgraduallyincreasinginUkraine.
TestrugglefortherestitutionanddevelopmentofUkrainianNationalChurch-
eshasbecomeanelementoftherevivaloftheUkrainiannationandstate.Te
reactivationofthehistoricalChristianChurches,theemergenceofaseriesof
newreligiouscommunities,legalconsolidationofreligiousfreedomsandthe
principleofequalityofallreligionshavebeenasignalofsystemicchangeand
democratizationofthesociety.Religiousassociationswantedtocontributeto
thesocialandpoliticalchangesinthecountry.Teywereprimarilyactivefor
thespiritualrevivalofUkrainethroughshapingconscience,educationalactivi-
tiesandcharity.Teysoughttoconsolidatemoralprinciplesinprivateandpub-
liclife,whichafertheSovietperiodwasofparticularimportance.Teyalso
workedtodefendtraditionalvaluesandhumanizesocialrelations.
TeconfessionalissueisfurtherdiscussedinanarticlebyMichałWawrzonek,
OrthodoxandGreekCatholicChurchesandtheprocessofcivilsocietyformation
inUkraine.Aferadetailedreviewofallreligiousassociationsincludedinthe
A.Kozyrska’stext,theauthorstudiedEasternchurches,whichgatheredmostof
thefaithfulinUkraine.Sofar,Wawrzonekhasmainlystudiedtherelationship
betweenreligionandpoliticsinUkraine,sothearticlebuildsonpreviousfind-
ingsandcontinuesthisresearch.Inaveryconciseform,theinfluenceofreligion
onpoliticswaspresented,emphasizingthediferinglevelofacceptanceofthe
newrealitybyclergyofdiferentrites.Particularattentionwaspaidtothedis-
cussionoftheattitudeoftheOrthodoxChurchelitestothechangingrelations
betweentheirinstitutionandthestate.Teevolutionofclergyattitudesnoted
bytheresearcher,isanimportantelementindicatingprogressingcommitment
onthesideoftheChurchtotheprocessofbuildingcivilsocietyinUkraine.
