Introduction:Tescopeofappliedpsycholinguistics
Oneistemptedtowonderwhetherthereisadiferencebetweenthetwodomains:
psycholinguisticsandappliedpsycholinguistics.Indeed,itisnoteasytoseparate
thesenear-synonymous(orjustplain-synonymous)disciplines,intermsoftheir
researchfocus.Psycholinguisticshastraditionallybeenseenasconcernedwith
thethreemajorprocessesinvolvedinhumanverbalcommunication,language
comprehension,languageproductionandlanguageacquisition,andsotoohas
appliedpsycholinguistics.Teonlyacademicorganizationofappliedpsycholin-
guists,ISAPL(TeInternationalSocietyofAppliedPsycholinguistics),founded
in1982atitsfirstCongressinMilan,definesitsmainaimas:“Stimulatingand
promotingactivityinthedomainofteachingpsycholinguisticsandapplied
psycholinguistics,ofresearchandpublicationsinthesefields”(ISAPLwww).
Althoughnocleardistinctionismadebetweenpsycholinguisticsandapplied
psycholinguistics,itcanbeassumedthat,asMininniandManuti(2012)statein
theirintroductiontotheISAPLCongressProceedingspublishedafertheBari
Congressin2010,appliedpsycholinguisticsfocuseson“howresearchcanencour-
agecommunicationprocessesamongpeople,groupsandcultures”(Mininni&
Manuti,p.10).Additionally,thepsycholinguistMariadaGraçaPintoemphasizes
“themission”ofappliedpsycholinguisticsbystating:“[ł]Iunderlinetheword
applied.Ibelievethatsocietyingeneralexpectsfromusefectiveapproachesto
thediferentaspectsoflanguagebehaviourandcommunication,aspectswhich
constituteintegralpartsofeverydaylife”(Pinto,1999,p.2).
Psycholinguisticsdrawsonthefindingsprimarilyofpsychologybutalso
thosefromlinguistics,neurosciences,anthropology,andmorerecently,from
computersciences.Ageneraldefinitionofpsycholinguisticsmightdescribeitas
apsychologyoflanguagebasedonhowcertainpsychologicalandneurobiological
factorsinteractinhumansatthelevelofcommunication,onthecomprehension
andproductionofverbalmessagesinaninteractionact,butalsointhebrain
ofanindividuallanguageuser.Apartfromtheabove-enumeratedfounding
