Thisbookisbasedonacademiclecturesgivenforalongtimebytheauthorto
undergraduatestudentsattheFacultyofAutomotiveandConstructionMachinery
EngineeringoftheWarsawUniversityofTechnology.Theentirecourseof
TheoreticalMechanicsisdividedintotwopartstaughtinthesecondandthird
semesterofstudy.Eachpartincludes15lectures.Themainobjectiveofboththe
lectureandthebookistoprovidestudentswiththenecessaryknowledgeand
skillstosolvemechanicalproblemsofstatic,kinematicordynamicnaturethat
canoccurintheirengineeringjoborearlierduringstudieswithintheirsemes-
terordiplomaprojects.
Makingdecisionsaboutthecontentsoftheprintedmaterialwasbasedonthe
assumptionthatthebookwouldnotcontainanysupplementarytopicsnotre-
quiredwithinthecourseofMechanicsitisassociatedwith.Nevertheless,the
bookisintendedtobeversatileenoughastoservestudentsofanyacademicpro-
gramofmechanicalengineeringatatechnicaluniversity.Theexistingrichlit-
eratureonMechanicsincludingmonographsandnumerousacademictext-books
isnotreectedintheReferences,wherejustseveralworksareincluded,rstof
alltooutlinedifferentapproachesandmethodologiesofpresentingthetheoreti-
calissuesandsolvingpracticalproblems.Readersareencouragedtoexplorethe
knowledgebehindtheframesofthisbook,notonlytolearnmoreprinciplesand
problemsinMechanicsbutalsotocompareprogramsofteaching,methodsand
tools,ndmoremotivationtodeveloptheirengineeringcriticismandcreativity.
Fromthemethodologicalpointofview,itshouldbeemphasizedthatinthis
book(andinthecorrespondingacademiclecture)thegeneralruleisappliedtopro-
ceedfrom“thegeneral”to“theparticular”.Forinstance,instaticswerstcon-
siderandanalyzereductionofthemostgeneralspatialsystemofforcesactingon
abodyandthenproceedtothespecialcasesofin-planeforces,parallelforces,
concurrentforcesandnallytothesystemofforcesequivalenttozero,whichleads
tothegeometricconditionsofequilibriumofabody.Theonlyexceptiontothe
aboveruleisproceedingfromaparticle(“particular”)toarigidbody(“general”),
whichisanaturalconsequenceofdevelopingthesecondNewton’slawofmo-
tionintolinearmomentumandangularmomentumlaws,validforarigidbody.
Problemsofstatics,kinematicsanddynamicsofparticlesandrigidbodiesare
analyzedseparatelytoreectpracticalproblemsandshowdomainsofdifferent
