domhadalreadyappearedontheUniversity’sﬁrstmedal,struckto

warlikedeity.Brodziński,likeNiemcewicz,whomhementionedinthis

address,believedthattheplanneduprisingwouldonlybringworsedis-

astersuponthecountry;butwhenitﬁnallybrokeout,bothmenjoined

TepoliticalatmosphereintheCongressKingdom,andthe

mountingconﬂictbetweenthetsaristauthoritiesandyoungstudentsof

theUniversity,wereeloquentlydescribedbyAleksanderJełowicki,who

hadﬁrststudiedinKraków,theninWarsaw,wherein1825hegradu-

atedwiththetitleofMasterofAdministration.Hisexcellentknowledge

ofPoland’scurrentandformercapitalcityenabledhimtomakevery

insightfulcomparisonsbetweenWarsaw’sdevelopmentandKraków’s

stagnation,andbetweenthepoliticaloppressioninthecapitalofthe

CongressKingdomandtherelativepoliticalfreedominKraków,Po-

land’sformercapital.Hewrote:

TedilerencebetweenWarsawandKrakówissuchasbetweena

livingandadeadcapitalcity.Tereonlymemories,likeevilghosts,

populatetheemptywalls,whileherethereismovementandthebus-

tleoflifeoftoday,thepresent;there,ediﬁcesfall,andhere,theyare
