organizedbytheChairofAmericanStudiesattheInstituteofAmericanStudiesand

PolishDiaspora,JagiellonianUniversity.Itwasoneinaseriesofinternationalconfer-

encesorganizedbytheInstitute,eachofwhichhasgatherednumerousresearchers

fromEurope,America,andAsia.Teconferencesreﬂecttheresearchagendaofthe

ChairofAmericanStudies,whichisnotlimitedtotheUnitedStatesexclusively,but

alsoembracesCanadaandLatinAmerica.Whatisofspecialimportanceisthatthe

presentconferenceaswellastwoearlierones,TeUnitedStatesandEurope:Conﬂict

versusCollaboration1in2005andU.S.ForeignPolicy:Teory,Mechanisms,Practice2in

2007wereavividsignofendlessinterestin“America,”asawidelyunderstoodconcept.

She,andthecountryoftheUnitedStatesinparticular,inspiresadmiration,irrita-

tion,and,inresearchactivities,raisesvariousquestionsandissuestobestudied.All

threeconferencesthatwehostedmetwithinterestintheacademiccommunity,and

thepapersandcontributionshadacertainexplanatoryimpactonthemainthemes

oftheconferences.

TeconferenceTeUnitedStatesandtheWorld:fromImitationtoChallenge

wasmeanttogatherthoseinterestedinvariousaspectsofthemutualconnections

betweentheUnitedStatesandtheworld.Itconcentratedontheproblemofthe

modelofAmericandemocracy,thepresidentialsystem,Americanpolitics,Ameri-

cansociety,Americancultureandtheworld,sreﬂectionsaboutthem–fromimita-

tiontochallenge.Forthis,therewasaninvitationtoscholarsfrommanyresearch

ﬁelds:politicalscience,philosophy,law,culturestudies,economy,andsociology.It

wasaresultofourvisionofAmericanStudiesasaninterdisciplinaryefort.And

so,thankstotherichanddiverseapproachesoftheparticipants,ourvisionturned

outtobetrue.
