Theintegrationprocesshasnowenteredanewandmoredifficultphase
characterisedbymassEuroscepticismandtheriseofradicalandpopulist
parties.Againstthebackdropoftheeconomiccrisis,Euroscepticism
hasbecomeincreasinglymainstreamedinthesensethatithasbecome
increasinglymorelegitimateandsalient,andinmanywayslesscontested,
acrossEurope.TheEuropeanelectionsinMay2014attesttothistrend.
ClaimsoftheEU’snon-democraticnatureandtheneedformajorreforms
havebecomecommonplaceamongmainstreamparties,andthiscontexthas
providedparticularlyfertilesoilforEuroscepticplayers.Thisintroduction
firstbrieflyexaminesthecomplexnatureofEuroscepticismbeforeturningto
anoverviewofthesuccessofpopulistandright-wingEuroscepticpartiesat
the2014elections.Then,itdiscussesthelackofinfluenceofthesepartiesin
theEPdespitetheirelectoralsuccess.Last,thearticlesincludedinthisissue

AnanalysisofthedevelopmentandprogrammaticstandpointoftheCzech
liberal-conservativepoliticalstream.Thearticleusestheconceptof
EuroscepticismaspresentedintheworksofSzczerbiakandTaggart,and
KopeckýandMuddeasthetheoreticalframeworkanddevelopsthisconcept
basedonPetrKaniok’snewtypology.Inthefirstpartoftheanalysisisa
discussionofthedevelopmentoftheEuroscepticfactionwithintheCivic
DemocraticParty(ODS)andchangesintheparty’spositiontowardsthe
EU.ItalsolendsunderstandingtotheEuroscepticfactionwithintheODS,
withVáclavKlausasitssupporterandthinktanksrelatedtohim,asthe
incubatorfortheestablishmentofthePartyofFreeCitizens(SSO)in2009.
Inthesecondpartoftheanalysis,thefocusisontheparty’sprogramme
anditspositionwithintheEuropeanpoliticalarena.Theanalysisalso
includesadiscussionofthemostvisibleproclamationsofthepartyleaders
