downbutpoliticalandeconomicchallengesyettoberesolved),popular
supportfortheEUprojecttendstobeindecline.Agrowingnumberofpolls
suggestthatwearelikelytoobserveasurgeofprotestvotesandvoting
absenteeism,bothofwhichrepresentbigchallengesfortheEuropeanUnion.
Asaconsequence,inthiscleardemocraticparadox,aninstitutionconstantly
increasingitspowersandinfluencingthelivesofEUcitizenstoanever
greaterextent,needstofindawaytocommunicatetothemitsprominence,
andpersuadethemtotakepartintheelection.

theevolutionofBritishpolicytowardstheEuropeanUnion.Admittedly,the
resultsoftheseelectionsareunlikelytobeviewedintheUnitedKingdom
(orinmanyothermemberstatesoftheUnion)asmattersofgreatpolitical
importanceinthemselves.TheConservativeparty’spolicytowardsthe
EuropeanUnionisattheveryleastanimportantpieceofthejigsawthat
makesuppoliticalandpopularattitudestowardstheEuropeanUnionin
Britain.IftheConservativePartyenjoysanabsolutemajorityafterthenext
generalelectionin2015,itwillbeinapositiontoconvertitsownEuropean
policyintoBritishgovernmentalpolicy.Norcanitbeexcludedthat,over
thecomingmonths,theLabourPartywillwishto,orthinkitselfobligedto,
mimicinitsownEuropeanpolicysomeelementsofConservativeEuropean
policyifthispolicyisseentobeattractivetoBritishvoters.
