Intoday’sculture,wearewitnessestoastrangeparadox:ontheone

hand,philosophyisbeingpushedtotheverymarginsofintellectual

inquiry,and,ontheotherhandwemeetwiththemodernperson’s

greatdesiretoobtainanswerstotrulyphilosophicalproblems.How

couldphilosophyaidinsolvingtheseproblems?

Prof.Clarke:Wehavetotakepossessionofthemostfundamental

ofattributesofthehumanbeing.Thatdesiretoknow.Theunrestricted

desiretoknowfully.Theyﬁrstofallpeoplehavetowanttoknow,and

withoutanyrestrictions,sothethemesongofthemetaphysicianis,

“Don’tfencemein”.Todophilosophy,toknowphilosophy,youhave

totakepossessionofthisunlimiteddrivetoknow.It’ssomethingthat

islimitedinitscapacitytoexplain,anditpresupposessomethingelse.

Wehavetotakepossessionofeverythingthatisimpliedbytheworld

ofthought,thecommunicationofbeingandsoon.Wehavetotake

possessionofthehumanmindthedesiretoknow,andthedesireto

knowfully.Wearesometimesunawarethatweareexplicitlypushing

philosophytothemarginsandimplicitlydesiringit.Theunrestricted

drivetoknow,andtoknowfully,isanessentialpartofthehuman.It’s

anunrestricteddrivesoitmustbecarriedonbyphilosophy,notby

someparticulardiscipline.Soalltheotherkindsofthingsthatwetry

toknowﬁtinasjustapartofthatunrestricteddrivetoknowasthe

centralpropertyoftheintellect,ofthehumanmind,thisunrestricted

drivetoknow.

Getthemintouchwiththatlongingtoknow,andgetthatmoving,

andthenjuststarttogodownindepth,andthenout,andthenjustcall

theirattentiontowhatisallaroundusthatwetakeforgrantedand

thenforgetabout,the“is.”AsShelleysaid,“Themistoffamiliarity

obscuresfromusthewonderofourbeing.”Existenceissofamiliar.It

iscommontoeverything,thatwejustsortofforgetaboutit,andit

dropsoutofsight.Toopentheireyesagain,torecognizethewonder,

asHeideggersaid,thewonderofallwondersthatanythingatallexists.
