W.NorrisClarke,S.J.,(1915-2008),anativeNewYorker,he
graduated,enrolledatGeorgetownUniversityin1931andenteredthe
SocietyofJesustwoyearslater.HisdeepeninginterestinThomist
philosophywasdevelopedatCollegeSt.LouisinEnglandin1936.He
continuedhisstudiesatFordham,earningamaster’sinphilosophyin
1939.HeearnedhisdoctoratefromCatholicUniversityofLouvainin
Belgium,wherehestudiedunderRomanCatholicphilosopherLouis
DeRaeymaeker.FatherClarkewasordainedintothepriesthoodin
1945andjoinedtheFordhamfaculty10yearslaterasanassistant
professorofphilosophy.Hetaughtforthreedecadesbeforebecoming
anemeritusprofessorin1985.
In1961,prof.ClarkehelpedfoundtheInternationalPhilosophy
Quarterly(IPQ),ajournalpromotingphilosophicaldialoguebetween
EuropeandtheAmericas.Heservedasaneditoruntilhis1985retire-
ment.
W.N.Clarkeconsideredhisphilosophicaljourneyasonemoving
fromstrictThomismtoaperspectiverevitalizingThomisticphiloso-
phytoincludean“implicitdimensionofpersonalism.”Hefeltthatthe
latterwasinspiredbythewritingsofPopeJohnPaulII.Theauthorof
eightbooks(e.g.:ThePhilosophicalApproachToGod,FordhamUni-
versityPress,2007,TheCreativeRetrievalofSaintThomasAquinas,
FordhamUniversityPress,2008)andmorethan70articles.
