Nagel(2008)hasconsideredtheissuesofsecurity,claimingthatthevery
technologiesthatmakeWeb2.0,especiallyAJAXandtheopensourcemovement,
seemtobevulnerabletosecurityviolationsandmaliciousactivities.Thisisalready
thecasewith‘wikivandalism,,orpurposefulinsertionoferroneousinformation
forvariousreasons.Anumberofsecurity-relatedphenomenahaveappearedin
theWeb-basedenvironment,withthemostprevalentbeingstealingprivatedata,
phishing,orhijackingWebtransactions,with‘vishing,,‘smishing,andvoice
spambecomingwidespreadinmobile-basedcontexts(Nagel,2008).
Theproblemofintellectualpropertyinfringement,alreadyevidentinthecase
ofwikivandalismorwebsiteframing,islikelytobecomeevenmorecrucial.
AsnewWebservicesgiveuserstheopportunitytoown,modifyandexchange
dataeasily,oftenwithlittleawarenessofthecopyrightholder,then,accordingto
Alexander(2006:42),itis"probablyinevitablethatintellectualpropertyholders
willinitiatelawsuitsinvestigatingperceivedmisappropriations.”Thisconcernis
alsoexpressedbyNagyandBigum(2007),whostressthatduetothefactthatWeb
2.0spacesenablelearnerstocollaboratewitheachotherwithoutanymediation,
collaboratorsareoftenunconcernedaboutintellectualproperty,accustomedto
easilyreceivingandgivinginformationwithoutanyconsiderationgiventolaw
violationorcompensation.TheonlineenvironmentscreatedbyWeb2.0software
aremuchlesspredictableandcontrollableasregardsstudents,learningpractices
andbehaviours,whichmightfurthercomplicatelearningproceduresatthe
universitylevel.
Tosumup,theprocessofimplementationofWeb2.0technologiesinhigher
educationneedstoaddressthefollowingissues(afterDąbrowski,2008):

Arethesetobeintegratedwithintheclosedsystemsofeducational

anystudent-madecontentafterthegraduationoftheauthor?
HowarelearnerstobeencouragedtouseWeb2.0tools?
Whatshouldbetheprocessofcreatingcontentbystudentsandthereaction
tobreakingnetiquette?
ShoulduniversitiesdeveloptheirownWeb2.0tools,customisedtothe
needsofthehighereducationinstitution,orshouldtheymakeuseofopensource
softwareavailableontheWeb?Andpromotethesewiththeirlogos?
However,theimplementationoftheseguidelinesintheacademiaisstillinits
infancy.Itisstillmoreandmorefrequentfor‘bottom-up,socialisingmovements
tocomeintobeing,withuniversitystudentsstartingupforumsandorganising
collaborationspaces,ratherthanhaveuniversitydepartmentsdesignstudent
participationarchitectureinatop-downfashion.
