gists.Itstasks,asformulatedinitsarticles,are"topromotethedevelopmentofthesociologicaldisci-

representtheinterestsofitsmembersinthesphereoftheirscholarlyandprofessionalactivity.”The

historyofthePolishSociologicalAssociationgoesbackto1956when,followingthecollapseof

Stalinism,therestitutionofsociologyinPolandtookplace.Atthattimeagroupofsociologists,acting

upontheinitiativeofStanisławOssowski,organizedaSociologicalSectionwithinthePolish

PhilosophicalAssociation,whichwasthentransformedintoanindependentPolishSociological

Association.ProfessorStanislawOssowskibecametheﬁrstPresidentofthePolishSociological

Association,withJanSzczepanskiactingashisdeputy.

Today,thePolishSociologicalAssociation[PSA]hasabout1000membersin13regionalbranches

inWarsaw(thelargestone)andinallcitieswithuniversities.WithinPSAthereareresearchcommittees

(sections)onsociologyoflabour,sociologyofmedicine,ruralsociology,sociologyofscience,social

engineering,sociologyofdevianceandsocialcontrol,sociologyoflaw,urbansociology,sociologyof

religion,socialanthropology,socialresearchmethods,socialwork,andhistoryofsociology.

ThehighestauthoritywithinthePolishSociologicalAssociationhastheGeneralAssemblyof

Delegates,whichelectstheAssociation’sPresidentandtheExecutiveBoard.PreviousPSAPresidents

Since1961ThePolishSociologicalAssociationhaspublishedThePolishSociologicalReview[in

English],andquarterlyinformationalbulletin.Thisbulletin,Informacjabieżąca,containsdescriptions

oflesserknownsociologicalcentres,announcementsof,andreportsfrom,sociologicalconferencesin

Polandandinternationally,andalistofnewsociologicalpublicationswithanemphasisonthose

bookswhicharepublishedinrelativelyfewcopiesandhencearelittleknownoutsidetheirplaceof

publication.

PSAparticipatesintheworldsociologicalmovementsbybeingpartofboththeInternational

SociologicalAssociation[ISA]andtheEuropeanSociologicalAssociation(ESA).Polishsociologists

haveheldimportantpositionsinISA,withProfessorPiotrSztompkabeingitsPresident(2002–2006).
