tobefoundedinCentralEurope–aftertheCharlesUniversityinPraguewasinitiatedin1348.Soon

afterwards,otheruniversitieswerelaunchedintheregion:Viennain1365,Pecsin1367,Erfurtin1379,

andHeidelbergin1386.

InstituteofSociology

ScientiﬁcandeducationalactivityattheInstituteofSociologyisadirectresultofrichtraditionandthe

diverseresearchinterestsofouracademicstaff.SociologyhasbeentaughtattheUniversitysincethe

endofthe19thcentury.

FollowingvariousUniversityrestructrualisationsandinitiatives,achairofethnologyandsociology

wascreatedin1930.ThechairwasﬁrstheadedbyProf.JanStanisławBystroń,andthenbyProf.

KazimierzDobrowolski.ThisacademicunittransformedintotheChairofGeneralEthnographyand

Sociologyin1957,chairedalsobyKazimierzDobrowolski.

Amongstotherstudies,trendsinmethodsofintegrationandcultural-historicalstudiesweredevel-

oped,aswellasaperspectiveonsocialanthropologythatwaspresentedbyProf.AndrzejWaligórski,

astudentofBronisławMalinowski.Inthesameyearthatthechairwascreated(1957),theChairof

SociologyandDemographycametolife,directedbyProf.PawełRybicki.Itconcentratedmainlyonthe

issuesofsocialstructuresandpopulationstudies(thelatterbeingstudiedmainlybyAssistantProf.

(Docent)WandaCzarkowska).

In1970bothoftheChairsmergedtoformtheInstituteofSociology.FormerheadsoftheInstitute

wereProfs.WładysławKwaśniewicz,PiotrSztompka,AndrzejK.Paluch,ZdzisławMach,Krzysztof

Frysztacki,MarianNiezgoda.TheInstituteiscurrentlyrunbyProf.MarekKucia.

OneofthekeycharacteristicsoftheInstituteishowbothstaffandstudentsalikeco-operatewith

otherinstitutionsinPolandandabroad.AgoodexampleofthisisofProf.PiotrSztompka,whowasthe

presidentoftheInternationalSociologicalAssociation(2002–2006).

TheInstituteofSociologyisfullyaccreditedbytheUniversityAccreditationCommissionin

Poznań,andhasacertiﬁcateofqualityforitsteaching.
