Preface
Samplesurveysprovideoneofthemostchallengingfieldsforapplying
statisticalmethodology.Theyconfronttheresearcherwithavastdiversity
ofuniquepracticalproblemsencounteredinstudiesofpopulations.They
include,butarenotlimitedto:non-samplingerrors,specialpopulation
structures,exoticorcontaminateddistributionsofstudyvariables,unsatisfactory
samplesizes,incorporationofauxiliaryinformationavailableonmanylevels,
simultaneous
estimation
of
characteristics
in
various
subpopulations,
integrationofdatafrommanywavesorphasesofthesurveyandincompletely
specifiedsamplingprocedures.Omnipresentconstraints,ontimeandcost,
additionallycomplicatetheprocessofdesigningasurvey.Dealingwithsuch
conditionsbringsabouttheneedtoformulatesophisticatedstatistical
proceduresdedicatedtospecificconditionsofasamplesurvey.Itgivesbirthto
awidevarietyofapproaches,methodologiesandproceduresborrowingtheir
strengthfromvirtuallyallbranchesofstatistics.
Thismonographhasbeenpreparedonthebasisofthepaperspresented
duringthesixth‘SurveySamplinginEconomicandSocialResearch’
conferencewhichtookplaceon21and22September2009inKatowice,
Poland.Thechaptersareextendedandimprovedversionsoftheconference
papers.Theirauthorsdealwithvarioustheoreticalandpracticalissues.The
commonthemeofallpapersistheirrelationtosamplesurveys.
ThepaperbyAgnieszkaZiębaandJanKordosisdevotedtoassessing
theprecisionofestimators,knownasLaekenones,formeasuringpovertyand
socialexclusion.Theseindicatorsareevaluatedonthebasisofacomplex
surveyinvolvingnon-simplesamplesdrawnusingatwo-stagestratified
samplingscheme.Threemethodsofvarianceestimationareconsidered:Taylor
linearization,jackknifeandbootstrapmethod.Asimulationstudycomparing
varianceestimatorsispresented.Guidelinesforthepracticaluseofthese
procedureswithemphasisonthecalculationofreplicationnumbersarealso
provided.
