Introduction
Itisanarguableassumptionthathorse-fightsshouldbegroupedwithsports
activitiesorevengamesasawhole.However,assertingthisisnotpointless
becauseitseemsclearthathorse-fightswereakindofentertainmentandthey
alsosatisfytheestablishedrulesontheterminologyofgames.Whatismore,
thewayhorse-fightswereorganizedbytheIcelandersoftheMiddleAgesis
quitesimilartoothergamesorsportssuchasknattleikrorglima.Thisarticle
isanattempttore-createthemethodofhorse-fightinginIcelandinthemedi-
evalperiod1includingtheculturalsignificanceoftheevent.
FortheIcelandersandotherNordicpeoplesoftheSagaAge,horseswere
oneofthemostimportantanimals(assignificantascattle).Thiscomesas
nosurpriseduetotheirmanyuses,suchasfortransport,foodandinpagan
rites(infuneralsasgravesacrifices,indivination,i.e.hippomancy,andas
sacredhorses)
