Awareofthis,theInstituteofInformationBookStudies,Universityof
Warsaw,haslaunchedspecialisedMAstudiesaimedattrainingprofes-
sionalswhowishtoworkatculturalandscientificinstitutionsrespon-
sibleforcultivatingthePolishnationalconscience.Itgoeswithoutsay-
ingthatthemostsignificantpersonagesofourhistoryarereveredwith
monuments,streetsarenamedtohonourthem,biographiesarewritten
torecounttheirachievements,andfilmsareshotabouttheirlives.But
weusuallypassbythelessnotablepersons,andtheircontributionto
Polishcultureremainsunnoticedforvariousreasons:lackofsources,
inadequatepublicity,etc.Theirdeedsareknownonlytospecialists
whoworkinrelatedfields,orresearcherswhostumbleduponthemby
chance.Inanattempttowidentheknowledgeofsuchpersons,weare
initiatinganewseriesofstudies,whichisdevotedtothesenewly“di-
scovered”Poles,whoseworksarelessobvioustothegeneralpublic,
albeitveryimportantforPolishculture.TheircontributiontoPolishhi-
story,literature,orscientificprogressattestsalsotheinputofthePoles
-ethnicallyofPolish,Ruthenian,Jewish,orGermandescent,people
whoinhabitedthemulticulturallandsofthePolish-LithuanianCom-
monwealth,whoweresubduedbyvariousforeignoccupants,orwor-
kedinexile-totheEuropeanheritage.Theseriesisentitled“Inputof
thePolestotheCultureofEuropeandtheWorld”.Volumeonecarries
thetitleModestPeople-GreatAchievement,andconveystotherea-
derinformationconcerninginstitutionsandpersons,whofunctioned
onPolishterritoriesduringthedayswhenPolandwaserasedfromthe
mapofEurope,makingtheminconsequencesubjectsoftheRussian,
