8|Introduction
Inthe20thcentury,thisscepticaldimensionhasbeenchallenged,with
proposedmulti-faceteddefinitionsofhealthcentredaroundtheconstruction
ofmodelswithamulti-dimensionalperspective.Thesearetheoriesthat
shapemedicalandhealthcareinterventions.Healthandcaringforitare
increasinglydeterminingpeople’sattitudestowardsthemselvesandalso
influencethewaysoforganisingsociallife.Medicinehasshiftedfrombeing
concernedsolelywiththeindividualtoencompassingtheentiresocietywith
itsresearchandactivities.
Thesecondhalfofthe20thcenturysawtheemergenceofawidevariety
ofhealthdefinitions.Dependingonthecontextoradisciplinewhereitis
analysed,healthcanbeunderstoodasavalue,aspecificstateoftheorganism
orasacertainbiologicalandsocialpotential.Healthisdefinedinmany
scientificdisciplines,primarilymedical,butalsosocialones(psychology,
pedagogy,sociology,philosophy).Thispolysemousconceptcanbestudied
andunderstoodinawidevarietyofcontexts.Historicalandcultural
conditionshaveunquestionablyshapedtheconceptofhealthandillnessin
scientific-philosophicalandsocialterms1.Itistheconcernforhealththat
hasinfluencedthedevelopmentofmedicineoverthecenturies.
Theconsiderationspresentedhereexplorethedevelopmentofmedical
knowledgefromthemostancienttimestothe20thcentury,whenhealth
gainedthestatusofavalue.Recognisingtheworldofvaluesofcontemporary
people,includingtheirreferencetothevalueofhealth,areimportant
groundsforbuildingglobalstrategiestostrengthenthequalityofhuman
functioninginthecurrentcivilisationconditions.Thesetasksshouldnot
belimitedonlytotheactivitiesofscholarsineducationalsciences;these
daysitisnecessarytoensureintensive,integratedeffortsofmanyscientific
