alsoinvoked,uponwhichdivinationevolved.Theconstellationofstarsinthe
sky,subjecttorepetitivechanges,broughttomindthecyclesofhumanlife
thatcouldbedecipheredonlybythechosenfew.Astrologyanddemonology
wereextremelyimportantpartsofworldknowledge,complementingand
enrichingalmostallmedicine-relatedmatters1.
InGreece,alongsidemagical-religiouspractices,theconceptsofhealth
andillnessweregraduallytiedtothenaturalsciencesand,inparallel,to
philosophy,bringingtogethermaterialrealitywithsensualsphere2.The
firstGreekphilosophersstudiedthelawsgoverningnature,assigningthem
ametaphysicaldimension.Theyanalysedthematter,forms,elementsand
principlesthatconstitutedtheworldanditsfunctioning.Theypointedtothe
elements:water,fire,airandearthasthereflectionofthenatureofallthings.
Theytreatedthemasbasiccomponentsofnatureandthehumanorganism,
forgingideasaboutitsstructureandhowitworks3.Thebodyandthesoul
weremadeoftheverysamematerialelementastheuniverse.Ahumanbeing
wasseenaspartofnature,conceivedasacopyoftheworld,alsoinfluenced
bytheheavens.Theselinksworkedintheotherdirectionaswell.Micro-
scalephenomenaweretransferredtothemacro-scale.Theirfunctioning
