Abstract
ShortlyafterthecaptureofConstantinoplein1453,SultanMehmedIImadeGennadios
Scholariosthenewecumenicalpatriarch,definingatthesametimetherightsandpriv-
ilegesoftheOrthodoxChurchunderOttomanrule.Wheninthe1530s,someMuslim
leadersdemandedthatthecity’sremainingchurchesbeclosed,SultanSüleymanthe
Magnificentrefusedonthebasisof(atravestyof)alegalinquiry.Aclosereadingof
GreekandOttomansourcesshedslightontheaccommodatingpolicy,calledistimâlet,
whichtheOttomanstatepursuedtowardtheOrthodoxChurch.

researchersofthesesources,awareoftheinconsistencies.
