Abstract
Oftenduchesses’namesdonotappearindocumentsduringtheirhusbands’life-
time.Thisdoesnotnecessarilyhavetobeasignoftheirweakness.Maybetheywere
notinterestedintakingpartinpubliclife.Withthedeathoftheirhusbandmecha-
nismsaimedatretainingpowerfortheirsonsweretriggered,whichwaswhatevery
motherdescribedinthethesiscaredsomuchabout.Thelongertheyreignedonbe-
halfoftheirunderageson,thelatertheywouldengageintopoliticsevenafterhe
hadassumedpowerbyhimself.Oftendocumentsissuedbytheadultsoncontained
approvalbyhismother,whilesheherselfstayedactiveinthepublicarenaandap-
pearedindocumentsuntilthetimeshedied.
Duchessesrulingintheirsons’steadhadtobeintelligent,firminactionsandca-
pableofexploitingtheexistingmechanismsofpower.Alotdependedontheirindi-
vidualpoliticalstanding,whichinturnwasbasedontheirpersonality,ontheir
placeoforigin(andgeneralperceptionsoflordlypowertheybroughtfromhome),
andontheirabilitytoemploycontemporaryculturaltrendsandfashionstotheir
benefit;forinstance,bydisseminatingthe13

Regent-duchessescouldtrytointroduceintheirsons’duchies,whateverexperi-
encesaboutgovernmentandothertraditionstheyabsorbedintheirownhomesand
families.Seeforexample,AnnaPřemyslid,thewifeofHenrykII,andViola,whose
originswereinBulgariaorinotherlandsintheSouth.Duchesses’politicalstanding
andthelongevityoftheirgovernmentdependedontheirindividualtraitsofcharac-
ter,genealogicalconnections,andtheirsons’predispositions(orthelackof)toeffec-
