Procedure
Participationtookplaceindividuallywithonlyaconfederatepresent.They
wereseatedfacingeachother,withapproximatelyfourfeetbetweenthem.Allpar-
ticipantshadbeeninformedabouttheirrightsandthegeneralaimsofthestudy.
Uponcommencementofthestudy,theconfederateintroducedthemselvesasalo-
caluniversitystudentinmarketresearchwhowasconductingastudytofulfill
courserequirements(Kulesza,Dolinski,Wicher,2016).Forthestudentsamplepar-
ticipantsweretoldtheywereinvolvedinastudytoassessandimprovethequality
ofteachingatuniversity.Fortheworkersample,theyweretoldtheywereinvolved
inastudytoassessandimproveworkplaceculture.Eachinterviewtookapprox-
imately7–10minutesandwascomposedof12questionsaskedinthesameorder.
Theparticipantswerefreetobrieflyrespondtoeachofthosequestions;responses
werenotrecorded.Duringtheinterview,theconfederatemimicked(ornot)the
participant’snon-verbalbehaviors.Oncetheinterviewwascomplete,thepartici-
pantscompletedself-reportsurveysandwereaskediftheyhadguessedthepur-
poseoftheexperiment.Lastly,theparticipantswerethanked,debriefed,and,for
thosewhoneededit,wereawardedcoursecredit.
Analyses
Thedatadistributionsinbothconditionsweresignificantlydiferentfromnor-
malformostofthedependentvariables(Shapiro-Wilktests,Wsrangingfrom=.64
to.95,ps<.050),meaningthatmostdependentvariableswerenotnormallydistrib-
uted(exceptfortraitsindexintheno-mimicrycondition,Ws=.96,p=.102).There-
fore,theMann-WhitneyUtestwasconductedtotestthemaingroupdiferences.
