ed,thesecondcolumnwasraisedtogetherwithitsCorinthian
capital.Thebottompartofathirdcolumnwasalsosetup.This
lastcolumnwasbrokenintwowithadiagonalbreak(60
degreesfromthehorizontal);threestainlesssteelrodswillbe
introducedtojointhetwoparts.Thecolumnwillbemounted
inthenextseason;thepresentonewasdevotedtopreparing
thesocketsforrodsaccordingtoaproceduredescribedinpre-
viousreports.Bothcolumnsweresetuponcompletelynew
basesmadeofartificialstoneandworkedwithatoothchisel
togivethematextureandcolorrecallingtheoriginalmarble
bases.Thefollowingformulaisusedfortheartificialstone:
30%whitePortlandcement,65%marblegritwithafraction
0.1-0.2mm,5%quartzsandfloatedandsifted.Inorderto
preventcrackingcausedbyhighfluctuationsindailytemper-
aturesaspaceabout0.30mindiameterwasleftemptyinthe
bases,whichare0.85mindiameter.
Threegreatblocksofnummulithiclimestonewererecov-
eredfromtheservice-arearoomadjacenttothecellarsofthe
portico(fuelstoreforthesecondfurnaceofthehypocaust).
Theblocksobviouslybelongedtothecorneroftheporticoes
oftheSouthGymnasium.Futureseasonswillbedevoted
toapartialreconstructionofthiscorner.Thisseasonthe
negativeofthenorthernpartofagatedismantledinmedie-
valtimeswasexcavated;thegateseparatedtheSouthern
Porticofromthepassage,whichjoinedittotheTheater
Porticointhewest.Thestructureiscurrentlyunderstudy.
