Thefacadeitselfwasfoundtobealmostentirelylacking
itsoriginalwallfacing.Findsfromadeeprobbers'pitlargely
confirmourpreviousconclusioninregardtothepossible
dateofthisoperation.NumerousfragmentsofEgyptian-made
SplashedWare(Fayyumi)andseveralimportedvesselsseem
topointtotheperiodofthe10thand11thcenturyADasthe
mostprobabledate.
Thefoundationsofthecisternswerereachedatthelevel
of8.00m.Therobbing,however,extendedevendeeper.Inthe
northernpartofthetrench,closetobuttress1damagescontin-
ueddowntoadepthof5.80mabovesealevel.Itwasonce
againconfirmed,thatthebuttressitselfwasbuiltontheearlier
structureservingasareadyfoundation.Thisstructureturned
outtobealargebasinbuiltoffiredbricksandlinedwith
waterproofmortar.Itwaspossibletoclearitswalldownto
thelevelof5.60m(i.e.2.40mbelowthepreservedtopofits
walls)withoutreachingthebottom.Originallyitformedpart
ofalargewatertankorcisternapparentlypredatingtheLate
Romanstructure.

Anotherdeepsoundingwasmadeintheareaclosetothe
southeasterncornerofthecisterns,encompassingalsothead-
jacentsectionofitscorridor.Theaccumulationwithinthecor-
ridorprovedtobesubstantiallydifferentfromthestratade-
positedalongtheeasternfacade.Itdidnotcontaineitherthe
