329-332)arguesthat,onarchitectural
grounds,thetombwascutduringthe
reignofAmenophisIII,andthuswas
mademostlikelyforMutemwia,another
wifeofTuthmosisIV
,andmotherof
AmenophisIII,aviewsupportedbyMarc
Gabolde(2013:190-191),whilstZahi
Hawass(2013:170)hasrecentlysuggested
thattheDNAofoneofthemummies
foundinthetomb,KV21A,indicates
thatsheisthemotherofthetwofoetuses
foundinthetombofTutankhamun.Tis
wouldtendtoimplythatKV21Aought
tobeAnkhesenamun;however,Gabolde
(2013:189-191,203)makesagoodcaseto
showthatthemummyKV21Aisactually
Mutemwia.IfKV46predatesKV21,then
itfollowsthatKV46wascutmostlikely
eitherbyAmenophisIIorTuthmosisIV
,
presumablyfortheburialofone(ormore)
oftheirchiefqueens.Roehrig(2010:
184)hassuggestedthatKV49,being
locatednearAmenophisII’sowntomb,
wouldbeabettercandidateforaqueen
ofAmenophisII.However,thistomb
doesnothavethesinglepillarintheburial
chamber,indicativeofamid-Eighteenth
Dynastyqueen’stomb,andTomas(1966:
147,165)hassuggestedthatbothKV49
andKV58shouldbedatedtothelater
EighteenthDynasty.
Reeveshasshownthatduringthe
laterEighteenthDynasty,startingwith
AmenophisIII,separatebutintegralparts
ofthekings’tombswereintendedforthe
burialsoftheirwives(Reeves2003:70;see
alsoHayes1935:29note104;1959:241)
whilstwiththeaccessionofRamessesI,
thechiefqueenswereburiedintheValley
oftheQueens.Littlework,however,has
beendoneonthequeens’tombsofthe
SeventeenthandEighteenthDynasties
priortothereignofTuthmosisIII,with
thelastmajorcontributiononthistopic
beingthatofJohnRomerin1976(Romer
1976).Tereisnodoubtthatthequeens’
tombsofthelateSeventeenth-early
EighteenthDynastywerebabtombs
havinganentranceshafleadingtooneor
morecorridors.Teyarewidelyscattered
throughouttheTebannecropolis,from
DraAbuel-NagainthenorthtoWadi
el-Gharby(WadiF)inthesouth.Tey
havebeenlittlestudied,sinceitis,with
afewexceptions,generallyimpossible
toassignanyoftheseanepigraphicand
robbedtombstoaparticularperson.1

isenteredviaanentranceshaf,ap-
proxi-mately1.20m2,which,forargu-
ments’sake,wewillcallA.Tisshaf
descended2mbeforeendinginacrudely
cutstaircasewhichextendedfor4m,and
descendedforafurther3m.Atapointjust
