AREAINFRONT
OFTHEBASILICA
Atesttrench,2.20msquare,wasexcavated
inthenortheasterncornerofunit20,
immediatelywestofthestepsleadingtothe
mainbasilicaentrancefromthewest.Te
unit,whichseemstohavebeenaroofed
courtyardinfrontofthechurch,was
discoveredlastseason.Arowofamphorae,
twelveofwhichwereunearthed,ranwest
fromthewallofthebuilding,presumably
continuingunderthefloorofunit20
[Fig.7].Tevesselswereburiedmouth
down,theirbodiescutoltoanevenlevel.
Amphoraeofthistypewerecommonfrom
the1sttothe4thcentury(seeCaravale,
Tololetti1997:156;Gempeler1992:
Pl.120,FormK700,188).Furtherstudies
areneededtointerpretthisstructure.
Significantly,thedateofthesevessels
matchesfindsfromtheamphorakiln,on
whichtheapseandpresbyteryofthebasilica
werefounded(forthedateofthevessels,
G.Majcherek,personalcommunication;
seealsoSzymańska,Babraj2004:62).
Altitudemeasurementshaveconfirmed
thatthelined-upamphoraeandthekilns
wereonthesamelevel.
