sincethedawnofhistory.Historicalsources9fromantiquity9showthatanappar-
entlytriVialignitionoffirecanfinallyresultindifficulttomanagefires9whose
consequencesaresosignificantthatrefurbishmentmaytakemanyyears.Thelist
ofthemostmeaningfulfiresinmodernhistory9togetherwiththeeXemplification
oftheirenVironmentalimpactcanbefounde.g.in[107].IntheconteXtofthis
thesis9theGreatFireofLondon(1666)wasaneXtremelyimportanteVent.The
rulesandlegalregulations9deVelopedasaconsequenceofthatfire9werethefirst
prescriptiveguidelinesin“modern”historythataimedtoreducetheriskofthe
fireandthesizeofitseffects[88].Forhundredsofyears9uptothelate480sof
XXcentury9mostoftheknowledgeaboutfiresafetywasempiricalbased9andthe
safetyaspectsweremainlydefinedbyarbitraryprescriptiVeregulationsconcern-
ingconstructionmaterials9constructionproducts9butalsothebuildingsthem-
selVesandtheirplacement.Thoseregulations9justastheyarenowadays9tended
toguaranteeasatisfactoryleVelofsafetyofpeopleandproperty.Oneofthebig-
gestbreakthroughsinthehistoryofstructuralfiresafetywasthedeVelopmentof
thetemperature-timecurVeforafullydeVelopedfireincompartment9referredto
todayastheISO834curVe(orcellulosiccurVe9orstandardnominalfirecurVe).
ThisachieVementallowedforstandardisationoffiretestsofstructuralmaterials
andstructuralelements9andthemethodologyoriginatedtheniswidelyusedto-
day.HoweVer9modernengineeringapproachestendtopredictthephysicalphe-
nomenabasedontrustworthymodels9ratherthanbeingbasedontheprescriptiVe
rules.ThesetypesofapproachesaregenerallycalledpBrformIncB-bIsBdIp-
proIchBs.Themethodologythatusesperformance-basedapproachesinthefield
offiresafetyengineeringiscalledpBrformIncB-bIsBdfirBBnginBBring.Thede-
signthatusesperformance-basedapproachestofulfildesignobjectiVesiscalled
pBrformIncB-bIsBddBsign.
Performance-basedfireengineering(PBFE)isusedinmanydifferentareas
concerningciVilengineering9e.g.designoffiresafetyofbuildingsandotheren-
gineeringobjects.Generally9thecorrectdesignmustfulfilcertaincriteriaresult-
ingfromrequirementsproVidedindesigncodesandotherregulations.Contrary
