Introduction
Thereisarichliteratureonalienspecies(antropophytes)bothinPolandand
inothercountries(e.g.KORNAŚ1968,1977,1990;FALIŃSKI1972,1998;MIREK
1981a;CLEMENT,FOSTER1994;REJMANEK1995,2000;WILLIAMSON1996,2002;
WEBER1997;SUDNIK-WÓJCIKOWSKA1998;JACKOWIAK1999;KOWARIK1999,
2002;PYŠEKetal.2002,2004;PYŠEK2003).Theauthorsoftheseabove-men-
tionedpaperspaymuchattentiontopermanently-establishedplantsandespe-
ciallytotheinvasivespecies(theirspread,biologyandmanagement).Mono-
graphicpaperscompletedinPolandcoverboththegroupof“oldcomers”the
archaeophytes(ZAJĄCA.1979)andtheplantswhichhavearrivedsincethedis-
coveryofAmericathekenophytes(TOKARSKA-GUZIK2005).
Alienplantspecieswhicharenotpermanentlyestablishedinagivenarea
(theso-calleddiaphytes)arelessoftentakenintoconsiderationinbotanicalpa-
pers(TRZCIŃSKA-TACIK1979).Mostlysuchpapersaredevotedtothoseorna-
mentalandcultivatedplantsspecieswhichoftenescapefromcultivation,the
so-calledergasiophygophytes(e.g.WALTERSetal.1984,1986,1989;CULLENet
al.1995,1997,2000;PODBIELKOWSKI,SUDNIK-WÓJCIKOWSKA2003).Basicinfor-
mationcanbefoundinthesepublications,regardingtheirbiology,habitat-re-
latedpreferencesandorigin.However,thegroupoftemporarily-introducedspe-
cies(ephemerophytes)istheleastknown.
In1987theAlphabeticalListofEphemerophytesofPoland(ROSTAŃSKI,SOWA
1986–1987)waspublishedcoveringmorethan500specieswhichwerethenin-
cludedinthepublicationentitledFloweringplantsandpteridophytesofPoland
achecklist(MIREKetal.2002).Theauthorsoftheseworkshavetreatedthis
groupofplantsinrelativelybroadtermsbyassigningtoitnumerousspecies
whichescapefromcultivation.Ithasalsoturnedoutthatsomespeciesgenerally
regardedasephemerophyteshavebeenobservedtopersistintheirlocalitiesfor
relativelylongperiodoftime(fromseveraluptomorethantenyears),tending
sometimestospread,suggestingthattheyshouldnowberegardedaskenophytes.
Theaboveobservationsleadtotheconclusionthatitisnecessarytoformu-
lateamoreprecisedefinitionofanephemerophyteandtoverifytheexisting
dataconcerningtheclassificationofspeciesintothisgroupofplants.
