orpatroness,thecourtwasundoubtedlyaninterestingadministrative,

economic,andculturalstructure,exertingastronginﬂuenceontheor-

ganizationofEuropeansocietyinthepre-industrialera.Thestructure

oftheEuropeanrulingcourtsﬂuctuatedconstantly:theirorganization,

theirmembers,andtheroletheyplayedchanged.Notonlywasthecourt

animportantelementofstateadministrationandtheadministrator

ofoﬁces,goods,andmeans,butalsothecreatorofnewculturalval-

uesandtheenvironmentwheretheyouthwaseducated,wheresocial

advancementwaspossible,andwhereclericalandpoliticalcareers

ﬂourished.

Toalargeextent,theirsize,members,andetiquettedependedonthe

ﬁnancialcapabilities,aswellasonthepoliticalstructuresofthecoun-

triesinwhichtheyoperated.Withtimeandthedevelopmentofnew

structuresintheroyaloraristocraticcourts,whichweretheconveyor

ofelitevaluesaswellasnewaestheticsandfashion,thecourtwould

becomenotonlyanelementofauthority,butalsoofprestige,aswell

asanexpressionofwealthbelongingtoaspeciﬁcsocialgroupcharac-

terizedbyacoherentsystemofsigns,gestures,andculturalcodes,which

constitutedacommunityofeducationalmodels,andceremonies.

TheRenaissancemarkedtheformationofneworganizationalstruc-

turesofcourtlycircles,thecreationofawomen’scourt,thedevelopment

ofthe“courtlyLady”andgoodcourtiermodels,aswellastheﬂourishing

ofthepoliticalpatronageofreigningmonarchs.Someoftheformercourt

oﬁcesceasedtoexist,otherstookonanewcharacterandfunctions.The

courtbecamenotonlyapoliticalunit,butalsoaculturalone,theforge

ofelitesformedinaccordancewiththewilloftherulerorinopposition
