nigsbergwasdescribed),therewasasigniﬁcantlackofanintellectual

groupthatwouldsupporttheprince.Ithadtobedevelopedasquickly

aspossiblebyinvitingmorescholarsandhumanists,suchas:Crotus

Rubeanus,JohannPoliander,orPaulSperatus.Createdin1544,theUni-

versityofKönigsbergwasdesignatedtosupplyPrussiawiththenew

elite:Lutheranpriests,physicians,oﬁcials,andscholars.Königsberg

Castle’slibrary,whichhadmoreorless9000itemsinitsinventory,was

supposedtoservethosepeople.ItwassupervisedbyFelixKönigPolyph,

whowasrelatedtoErasmusofRotterdambeforearrivinginPrussia.4

LucasCranachd.A.(whoalsotookcareofsendingprintedbookstoHans

LuńtinWittenberg)tookpartinthelibrary’screation.Heinformedthe

rulerofDucalPrussiain1527thatthesupplyofnewliteraturewasgoing

tocostroughly187ﬂorins.Amongtheworksreceived,therewastheBible

illustratedbyCranachandotherartists.5

WhenbecomingtheheadoftheOrder,AlbrechtvonHohenzollern

realizedtheimportanceofartinbuildinghismoderncourt.In1511,

themomenthewaselectedandleavingforPrussia,heorderedLucas

CranachtheEldertopainthisﬁrstportrait.6Thisworkofartwasjust

apreviewofanumberoffurtherrequestsandnumerousordersplaced

intheworkshopoftheWittenbergpainter.Theseworksofartappeared

inthenextdecadesthroughoutDucalPrussia.In1516,fourunknown

tabletsarrivedinPrussiaalongwithMadonna’spictureintendedforthe

CathedralinKönigsberg,createdbyLucasCranachd.A.Inthenextyears,

theprinceorderedthecreationofalotofpaintingsthatfeaturednot

onlyreligiousmattersandportraitsbutalsoseculartopics.Dietrichvon

SchonbergboughtHerculesandAntaeusforAlbrecht;apaintingcreated

inCranach’sworkshop.7
