byfemalemagnates,asthoseoﬁcialsindirectlyconstitutedalinkbe-

tweenthefemalecourtandthesubjectsinlandedestates.Courtoﬁ-

cialsalsomanagedtheﬁnancialtransactionsoftheirpatronessesand

oversawboththeharvestandleasecontracts.Theauthorfocusesnot

onlyonestatemanagement,butalsotriestoshowtheworldofcourt

oﬁcials,estatemanagersandtheirrelationswithpatronesses.Similar-

ly,AgnieszkaLaszczak-Słabydiscussesthesituationofstableservants

atPolishmagnatecourtsinthe18thcentury.Theauthorfocusesnot

onlyontheselectedaspectsofstableservantsworkandlife,butalso

onstudfarms,whichinthePolish-LithuanianCommonwealthhadboth

aneconomicorprestigevalueandasymbolicone.

BożenaPopiołek’stextisanattemptatreconstructingtheworldoffe-

maleownersofprovincialmanorsonthebasisoftheiraccountingbooks,

householddiaries,andmanorinventories.Itshowstheinterestingworld

ofPolishprovincialnobility,whoseaspirationsforsocialadvancement

totheelitewerefrequentlylimitedbytheirﬁnancialmeans.Theauthor

alsodemonstratesthatitispossibletoanalyzeaccountingdocuments

togetaninsightintothementalityofpastsocieties.

attemptsatestablishingsocialstatusthrougharchitecturalandartistic

undertakings.SheconcentratesonthearchitecturalplansoftheWar-

StanisławAugustPoniatowski.Theauthoranalysesthelayoutofthe

apartments,theirpurpose,andtheroletheyplayedinthelifeofthe

courtofLudwikaZamoyska.Shepaysattentiontothefurnishingsofthe

residence,thegalleryoffamilyportraits,theirimportanceinthepro-

cessofcreatingtheimageoftheroyalfamily,andtheroleofLudwi-

kaZamoyskainthisprocess.Inasimilarvein,KarinSchrader’stext

analysestheuseofminiatureimagesinpoliticalpropagandaandthe

roleofmaterialcultureinresearchontheroleofartisticpatronage.

K.Schraderemphasizesﬁrstofalltheunusualculturalandeconomic

roleofportraitminiatures,theirimportanceinthestudyofcourticonog-

raphy,orthehistoryofmentality.Theseminiatureworksofportraitart

servedanimportantculturalfunctionandwereavaluabletoolofcourt

propaganda.Lastpaper-byAnnaPenkała-Jastrzebska,examinatesthe

problemofFashionasacarrierofcarrierofFrenchcourtculture.The
