loaditwith,andhowtopreservewhatIlaiduponitfromthesurfofthesea;butIwasnot
longconsideringthis.IfirstlaidalltheplanksorboardsuponitthatIcouldget,andhaving
consideredwellwhatImostwanted,Igotthreeoftheseamen'schests,whichIhadbroken
open,andemptied,andloweredthemdownuponmyraft;thefirstoftheseIfilledwith
provisions-viz.bread,rice,threeDutchcheeses,fivepiecesofdriedgoat'sflesh(which
welivedmuchupon),andalittleremainderofEuropeancorn,whichhadbeenlaidbyfor
somefowlswhichwebroughttoseawithus,butthefowlswerekilled.Therehadbeen
somebarleyandwheattogether;but,tomygreatdisappointment,Ifoundafterwardsthat
theratshadeatenorspoiltitall.Asforliquors,Ifoundseveral,casesofbottlesbelonging
toourskipper,inwhichweresomecordialwaters;and,inall,aboutfiveorsixgallonsof
rack.TheseIstowedbythemselves,therebeingnoneedtoputthemintothechest,nor
anyroomforthem.WhileIwasdoingthis,Ifoundthetidebegintoflow,thoughvery
calm;andIhadthemortificationtoseemycoat,shirt,andwaistcoat,whichIhadlefton
theshore,uponthesand,swimaway.Asformybreeches,whichwereonlylinen,and
open-kneed,Iswamonboardinthemandmystockings.However,thissetmeon
rummagingforclothes,ofwhichIfoundenough,buttooknomorethanIwantedfor
presentuse,forIhadotherthingswhichmyeyewasmoreupon-as,first,toolstowork
withonshore.AnditwasafterlongsearchingthatIfoundoutthecarpenter'schest,which
was,indeed,averyusefulprizetome,andmuchmorevaluablethanashiploadofgold
wouldhavebeenatthattime.Igotitdowntomyraft,wholeasitwas,withoutlosingtime
tolookintoit,forIknewingeneralwhatitcontained.
