ofKnowledge(nottheTreeofLife)thatisgivenbysomephilosophersisquite

striking:“ThefruitoftheTreeofKnowledgeofGoodandEvilisReason,which

sinceitbecamethefoundationofphilosophyforever,deriveseverythingfrom

itself.Godwasexpelledfromtheworldhecreated,andhispowerfellentireinto

thehandsofReason,which,althoughitdidnotcreatetheworld,offeredtohu-

mankindaboundlessabundanceofpreciselythosefruits,againstwhichthecrea-

torhadwarnedthem.ThehumanReason’sdreamsofinﬁnitesuccessandtri-

TheviewsofancientGreekphilosophersrepeatedlyindicatethatfemale

bodywasperceivedasanobstacleinthestrivingforphilosophicalideals.In

BookVofPlato’sdialogueTheRepublic,inthediscussionpertainingtophi-

losopher-kings,womenarementionedasequaltomenascandidatesforthe

ofﬁceoftheguardianofthestate,whichmightsuggestanegalitarianapproach

togenderissues.Yetgenerallyitwasafﬁrmedthatfemalenatureisdifferent

from,andinferiorto,themaleone,thatinalltheirendeavourswomenare

(Tatarkiewicz1970).

Accordingtotheancients,achildwasconceivedoutofthespiritofitsfather,

andonlyfedonthebloodofthemother;awoman,duetoherinnatesexuality,
