Teconferencedidnotfocussolelyonthistypeofobjectsbutalsoincluded
19th-centuryart,music,manuscript,andspecialcollections-forinstance,docu-
mentsintheCentralLibraryofLabourandSocialSecurity,photographalbums,
andherbaria(seetheConferenceProgrammeintheAppendix).Wesuggested
thematicareasaddressingissuesrelatedto19th-centuryhistorical,artistic,and
specialcollectionsinlibraries,archives,andmuseums,suchasorganisation
andconservation,aestheticstatusandvaluation,terminology,researchmethod-
ology(includingthefundamentalquestion:Dowehavedevelopedstandards?),as
wellascollectionsasateachingresourceforacademicinstitutionsandaresearch
toolforotherfieldsofartandscience(Figs.3-4).Teseissueswerediscussed
invaryingdegreesinmostofthepresentations,whichfocusedmainlyonstud-
iesonprovenance,contents,andsystematisationofbookandotherhistorical
collections,aswellasonmethodology,conservation,andorganisation.Another
discussedtopicwasthepublicationofresearchresultsinprintedcataloguesof
collections,aswellasthepresentationofthelatteronline.Toalesserextent,the
conferenceparticipantsaddressedthedifcultproblemofre-evaluatingthesecol-
lectionsandtryingtoredefinetheirartistic,historical,oraestheticvalue.Tisis
animportantissueinsofaraswerealizethatitgreatlyańectshowacollection
ispreserved,supplementedwithnewacquisitions(collectionpolicy),catalogued,
andresearched.
Underaninternationalcooperationagreement,wehostedtheresearchers
fromtheStatePublicScientificandTechnologicalLibraryoftheSiberianBranch
oftheRussianAcademyofSciences(Figs.5-6),withwhichtheUniversityof
WarsawLibraryhadaparticularlyfruitfulcollaborationin2014-2018,includ-
ingAndreyGuskov,PhD,GeneralDirectoroftheinstitution,aswellasstań
fromtheLibraryoftheRussianAcademyofSciences.Amongthespeakerswere
2DuetostańchangesandtheadoptionofotherprioritiesbythenewteammanagingtheUniver-
sityofWarsawLibrarysinceJuly1,2018,theplansoffinalreorganisationandseparationofthe
19th-centurycollectionshavebeensuspended(?).TeindependentreadingroomoftheNine-
teenth-CenturyPublicationsDepartment,establishedwithconsiderableresourcesandwork,with
exceptionalsupportandengagementofourlibrarystańandtheLibraryFacilityMaintenance,
thelatterresponsiblefortechnicalandconstructionworks,wasclosedunexpectedlyin2020.Itis
difculttopredictwhatthenextstepsconcerningthispartofthecollectionwillbe,asthereareno
substantiveconsultationswiththeexperiencedandprofessionalteamoftheNineteenth-Century
PublicationsDepartment,whichhasexpertknowledgeaboutthiscollection.Inconsequence,
thereisnoclearpolicyforthispartofthelibrary’scollection;itshouldcoveramuchbroader
perspectivethanthebasiccataloguinganddigitisingofresources,andaboveall,forecastshort-
andlong-termactivities.
