Introduction
Research1onBuddhisminMongoliaduringitscommunistpastbecamepossi-
bleonlyafterthecollapseofthecommunistregime.Oneofthefirstprojects
tostudythepastandpresentstateofBuddhisminMongoliawasconductedby
scholarsfromPolandandNorway.InitiatedbyAgataBareja-Starzyńskain1997,
itresultedintheresearchgrantflRevivalofBuddhisminMongoliaafter1990”
inthefollowingyears.2In1998thegroupofscholarsengagedinfieldworkfor
theprojectinthecentralandnorthernMongolianlandsconsistedofHanna
HavnevikfromtheUniversityofOsloandthreescholarsfromtheUniversityof
Warsaw:AgataBareja-Starzyńska,MarekMejor,andThuptenKungaChashab,
aswellastheircollaboratorinUlanBator,ByambaaRagchaafromtheLibrary
oftheGandategchenlinMonastery.Theresultsoftheirworkwerepresentedin
apaperpublishedinPrzeglądOrientalistycznyin1999whichlaidthefoundation
forfurtherresearch.Someofthefindingsfromthatstudyhavealsobeenusedin
thepresenttext,connectingitwiththeworkofourcelebratedcolleague,Marek
Mejor,whosecontributiontothestudyofBuddhisminMongoliashouldbeduly
acknowledged.
