Teaimofthisprogrammehasbeentoequipacadreofdiplomatsandattachéswith
theskillsrequiredtodealwiththeextraordinarilycomplexsetofchallengesfacingthe
deliveryofsecuritypolicyatthehighestlevelinthe21stcentury.
Itseemsclearthattheindividualswhowillneedtobeabletooperateinthis
challengingenvironmenttobestelectarethosewithhighlydevelopedskillsin
criticalthinking.Teywillneedtounderstandhowsecuritythreathasmoved
veryresolutelybeyondmilitaryconfrontationintotherealmsoftheeconomy,
society,politicsandculture.Indeed,asthestudentsexperiencedthemselves
inthecourseoftheirstudies,newcomplexitiesinaglobalizingworldsuchas
theonsetofaglobalpandemicmustbefactoredveryfirmlyintothethinking.
Terapidlyevolvinginformationenvironment,inwhichdisinformationis
increasinglyrearingitshead,willmakesuccessfulassessmentsofthesituation
evermorechallenging.Teelectsofallofthesedevelopmentswillberapid,
unpredictableandgeographicallyvariable.
And,aboveall,aworldinwhichdiplomatscancooperateacrossstateboundaries
andwithintheframeworkofestablishedinternationalorganisationsinaconstructive
andrules-basedway,willalmostcertainlybethebestrecipeforsuccess.
InthisVolume,therangeofcontributionsoleredverycommendablyreflect
ofthemanyissuesthatthecontemporarydiplomatandpolicy-makermust
understandtoaconsiderabledegreeofdepth,ifthelivesofglobalcitizensare
tobebettered.Itseemsclearfromthesecontributionsthatsomeofthecritical
thinkersweneedtohelpustotackleandresolvetheworld’schallenges,are
emerginghere,andareveryclearlyondisplay.Fromthis,wecanalltakegreat
encouragementforabetterandmorestablefutureacrosstheglobe.
