Introduction

TheareacalledGaliciathatexistedbetween1772and1918asageopolitical

entitywasassociatedwiththedominanceoftheHabsburgEmpire,which,with

RussiaandPrussia/Germany,wasoneofthemainpowersinCentralEurope.In

theinterwarperiod(i.e.,afteritsactualerasurefromthemapofEurope)itstill

constitutedoneofthemostmulti-cultural,multi-ethnic,andmulti-faithterritories.

AfterWorldWarII,andpreciselyaftertheHolocaustofGalicianJews,afterthe

divisionoftheformerprovincebetweenPolandandtheSovietUkraine,andthe

resettlementofthepopulation,thelastresiduaofGaliciannessandoftheworld

towhichtheybelongedhavedisappearedfromthefaceoftheearth.Today,the

areaofGalicianowdividedbetweenPolandandUkraineanddespiteitsabsence

fornearlyacenturystillarousesinterest

Galiciabecamethesubjectofmanyvaluablestudies,notonlyamongPolish

scholars.Mostofthisresearch,however,manifestedanapproachthatinvolved

thereconstructionofthesubject,thetheme,or-particularly-themythof

Galiciainliteratureandculture.Inthemeantime,thehorizonofstudieson

theformerHabsburgprovincethathavebeenundertakeninthecontextofthe

publicationGalicianPolyphony:PlacesandVoicesisdefinedbysuchresearch

perspectivesasmemorological,post-dependence,andaboveall-geopoetrological

studies.TheapplicationofthesemethodologiestoGaliciansubjectmatterledto

anapproachcenteredaroundpoetologicalandpoliticalaspectsoftherepresentation

ofspace,theissuesofnegotiatingindividualandcollectiveidentityinthespace

ofcoexistenceandstruggleofdifferentcultures,aswellasthevariousideological

conceptualizationsofGalicia,subjecttocriticalreflectioninthepresentedtexts.

Specificissuesthatareconsideredinthispublicationare:

a)Thecategoryofcollectiveandculturalmemory,andgeopoetryinrelationtothe

functioningofGaliciaintheliteraturesofthedifferentlanguagesoftheregion;

b)Issuesrelatedtotherelationshipofplacesandlanguage/languagesandtheir

correlationwithindividualandcollectiveidentityinGalicia;
