Steelorthotropicdecksaresensitivetostiffener-to-deckplatefatigue.Larger
trafficvolumesandconcentratedwheelloadscontributetothisphenomenon.
Traditionally,theeffectofthewearingcoursesistakenintoaccountthroughload
dispersalunder45°reducingthestressatthedeckplatesurface.Howeverforasphalt
surfacingsthiseffectissmall.Amorereliablesolutioncouldbepresentifastructural
cooperationwerepresentbetweenthedeckandthesurfacing.Inthispaper,theresults
arepresentedfromastudyofvariousalternativesforalightweightbridgesurfacing
contributingtofatiguereductionatthestiffener-to-deckplateintersection.Asphalt,
neopreneandcompositelayersareconsideredaswellashoneycombsandwichpanels.
Theeffectofthesolutionsismeasuredbystraingaugesonanorthotropicbridgepriorto
thefinalsurfacinginstallation.Theresultsarecomparedwithconclusionsderivedfroma
finiteelementmodelandindicatethatdependingonthetypeoflayer,a20to30%
reductionofstressesispossible,resultingina3to5timeslongerfatiguelife,without
increasingthedeckweight.
