ProfessorGerasimosLadaswasborninGreece.He
completedhis
undegraduatestudies,supportedwithafellowship,intheDepartmentof
MathematicsattheUniversityofAthens,wherehegraduated"summacumlaude",
in1961.In1964hewasaccepted,withafellowship,tothegraduateprogramin
mathematicsatNewYorkUniversity’sCourantInstitutewherehereceivedhis
Ph.Din1968.HetaughtatFairfieldUniversityinConnecticutin1968andthen
movedtojointhefacultyofMathematicsattheUniversityofRhodeIslandin1969.
In1975hewaspromotedtotherankofFullProfessorofMathematicsatthe
UniversityofRhodeIsland.HewastheDepartmentChairpersonfrom1972to
1978,theGraduateProgramDirectorfrom1982to1986,andtheDirectorofthe
Ph.D.PrograminAppliedMathematicalSciencesfrom1992to1997.
TheresearchinterestsofProfessorLadasareintheareasofDifferentialand
DifferenceEquations.Hehasdoneseminalworkintheoscillationtheoryofdelay
differentialanddifferenceequations.Hismonograph(withGyori)isoneofthe
mostcitedbooksinthisarea.ForthelasttwentyyearsProfessorLadasandhis
collaboratorshavemadeoutstandingdiscoveriesintheareaofrationaldifference
equations.Furthermore,motivatedbyrationaldifferenceequationsProfessor
Ladasandhiscollaboratorshaveobtainedalargenumberofpowerfulglobal
stabilityresultsforquitegeneralnonlineardifferenceequations.
ProfessorLadashaspublishedover270researchpapers,3textbooksand6
monographs.Hispublicationsappearedinmanyinternationalmathematical
journals.Hehaspresentedhisresearchworkatnumerousconferences,both
nationalandinternational.Histalksusuallyincludeacomprehensivesetofopen
problemsandconjecturesshowingnewdirectionsinhisarea.ProfessorLadashas
servedasaMemberoftheScientificorOrganizingCommitteeofnumerous
InternationalConferencesandco-editedtheProceedingsof8International
Conferences.Manytimeshewasinvitedabroadtogivelecturesandmany
mathematiciansfromaroundtheworldhavevisitedtheMathematicsDepartment
attheUniversityofRhodeIslandandhavecollaboratedwithProfessorLadas.He
alsodoesjoinedresearchworkwithmanymathematiciansaroundtheworld.
Since1966ProfessorLadasisaMemberoftheAmericanMathematical
Society.ProfessorLadasistheco-Editor-in-ChiefoftheJournalofDifference
EquationsandApplications(withSaberElaydi),theeditoroftheBookSeries
DiscreteMathematicsandApplications,andtheAssociateEditorof15other
mathematicsjournals.Heisalsoarefereeofmathematicsresearchproposalsfor:
NationalScienceFoundation,U.S.ArmyResearchOffice,ResearchCorporation,
NaturalSciencesandEngineeringResearchCouncilofCanada.
