Inmanycontemporarydebatesandethicaldisputes,inparticularin
thosewhichconcernbioethicalissues,anargumentovertherightofpar-
entstohaveornottohaveachildarises.Ontheonehand,wehearsome
quitecommonargumentssuchas:“Wehavetherighttohaveachild.”
Thisargument,putforwardinthedisputesconcerningtheinvitrofer-
tilization,comesfromthecouplessuferingfrominfertility
,whofurther
strengthentheirstandpointwithastatementsomehowespeciallyjus-
tifyingthis“right”“weloveeachother.”Thus,aclaimincludedin
theformoflawandsupportedwithstrongethical-soundingarguments
appearsasaconsequence:“Sinceweloveeachotherverymuch,wehave
therighttohaveachild.”Thesamereasoningappearsinthediscussions
concerningthelegalizationofadoptionofchildrenbyhomosexualrela-
tionships:“Ifthesepeopleareinloveandwanttohaveachildandraise
it,theyshouldbeallowedtoexecutethatright.”
Ontheotherhand,thereappearargumentswhichinacomparable
styleandbasedonananalogous“legal”structure,expressfirmopposi-
tiontowardhavingachild.Weoftenhearthat“awomanhastherightto
abortion.”Behindthisstatementliesamoreorlessimmediatelyrealized
oppositionbetweenthearticulatedwoman’srighttoterminatethelife
ofthefetusandtheallegedrightsofthechildtolife.
